the Gardens of Sunsport

Pachira aquatica is a species of tropical wetland tree in the mallow family Malvaceae, native to Central and South America where it grows in swamps. It is known by its common names Malabar chestnut, French peanut, Guiana chestnut, Saba nut and is commercially sold under the names money tree and money plant. This tree is sometimes sold with a braided trunk and is commonly grown as a houseplant, although more commonly what is sold as a "Pachira aquatica" houseplant is in fact a similar species, P. glabra.

Java Plum Tree - Why the Hate?

Syzygium cumini

The Good:

In the Majjhima Nikāya, three parallel texts (MN 36, MN 85 and MN 100) claim that the Buddha remembered an experience of sitting in the cool shade of a jambu tree when he was a child. While his father was working, he entered into a meditative state which he later understood to be the first stage of Jhāna meditation. The texts claim that this was a formative experience, which later encouraged him to explore and practise Jhāna meditation, and that this then led to his Awakening. The Pāli word jambu is understood by Pāli dictionaries to refer to the Syzygium cumini which they often translate as the Rose-apple tree, which in Florida refers to a different species - Syzygium jambos.

The Bad:

Java plum (Syzygium cumini) was first introduced to Florida in 1911 by the US Department of Agriculture for its edible fruit and ornamental qualities. It has since escaped cultivation and become invasive in south Florida, displacing many native plants. This tree is mentioned in many Eastern religious texts as providing deep shade for contemplation. All parts of the plant are used in Eastern folk medicine. Many South Florida blogs have written extensively on using the fruit for recipes. Java plum is not prohibited in Florida, but the Florida Invasive Species Council (FISC, which was formerly FLEPPC) lists it as a category I invasive, indicating known negative ecological impacts. UF/IFAS first assessed Java plum in 2003 and then most recently in 2021 and has concluded that Java plum is invasive in South Florida.
Eventually no native plants will be left under the canopy
Habit: Fast-growing and long-lived evergreen tree that may reach 100ft in height but often supports multiple stems from a short primary trunk. The lower bark is coarse and discolored while newer growth is smooth and gray.

Flowers: Inflorescence is typical of members of the Myrtle family with numerous pronounced stamens. Flowers are white or pink with short petals fused into a cup approximately one half-inch in diameter. Flowering occurs from late spring to summer, and fruit matures by late summer.

Fruit: The fruit is an ovoid, 1-seeded berry that is slightly less than one inch in length, turning from green to pink to deep crimson and finally black. Wildlife readily consumes the fruit, but the fruit can also be eaten raw or baked into desserts.

Impacts

Java plum’s fast growth and dense canopy enable it to shade out native trees and shrubs in Florida’s hammocks, pine flatwoods, and well-drained uplands. Fruit-loving birds and other animals, such as wild boar, consume the fruits and may facilitate spread.

Control MethodsPreventive Measures
UF/IFAS does not recommend the propogation of Java Plum. Avoid its use in landscapes and replace it with native or non-invasive shade trees.

Cultural/Physical
Hand-pull seedlings. To prevent new seed production, remove saplings before five years from establishment as they take approximately five years to reach sexual maturity.
Mechanical
Use chainsaws on mature trees.
Biological
There are currently no biological controls available for release.
Even Cabbage Palms, Brazilian Peppers and mighty Oaks succumb to the shade of the Java Plum.

Hey What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is a philosophy of design for creating a sustainable human culture. That is, it's a way of thinking about how we set up the support systems around us: shelter, food, water, energy, society and business. Well designed permaculture systems allow us to live as a beneficial part of the ecosystems around us.

Art & Naturism.......naturist spirited art

Edvard Munch

Norwegian, 1863–1944

A forerunner of Expressionism, Norwegian painter and printmaker Edvard Munch is renowned for his representations of love, loneliness, and death. His most famous painting, The Scream (1893), is an instantly recognizable symbol of modern anxiety and alienation.

The Scream
Associated with the international development of Symbolism, Munch experimented with many different themes, palettes, and techniques of painting and drawing. Though he took stylistic inspiration from Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh, Munch drew his subjects from his Scandinavian roots and his own tortured psyche.

His work belongs in the collections of Tate Modern, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Museum in Oslo and has commanded millions on the secondary market. While he is best remembered for his paintings, Munch also took an experimental approach to printmaking, and his woodcuts were particularly influential.
