The Mid-Winter Naturist Festival was a great success.

We had a record number of attendees and over 220 activities. All 6 days had beautiful warm weather. At the Closing Friendship Circle, people said it was the best Festival ever.
Many thanks to the workshop leaders, the Sunsport volunteers, and the Sunsport staff who worked long hours to produce a smooth running and stimulating Festival. Contributions from the Festival registration fee will go to the Naturist Society Foundation, South Florida Free Beaches (Haulover Beach), and Treasure Coast Naturists (Blind Creek Beach).
As always, the Festival was six days of fun, growth and community.

The Annual Coed Volleyball Tournament:

The Annual Coed Volleyball Tournament on February 26th was lots of fun. It is unique in that players are a member of a different team for each game. Vickie Wesby and Mike Patchkowski were crowned queen and king for totaling the most points in the games in which they played.

IMPORTANT TRASH POLICY CHANGE

The trash area in the northeast corner of Sunsport has been eliminated. Large trash items may now be placed only in the maintenance yard with the supervision of Team Leader Roger Byrd, preferably Monday through Friday.
The trailer holding recyclable scrap metal will be moved to the maintenance area. Plastic bags full of waste should be deposited in the dumpster in the recycling area, not in the maintenance area.

Reminder:
Reminder: Please use the appropriate containers for throwing out items. Place materials such as clean paper and cardboard in the yellow bins; cans, plastics (except styrofoam, utensils, and bags), juice boxes, and glass and plastic bottles in the blue bins. Place large items such as platforms and furniture near, but not in, the dumpster. Place only bagged garbage and small items in the dumpster.

To help Sunsport and the environment, *please deposit aluminum cans in a special bin with a round hole in the top in the main recycling area.
  • The yellow containers are for paper and flattened cardboard
  • The blue containers are for aluminum cans*, glass, juice boxes, and plastics except styrofoam, bags, and utensils.
  • Deposit other trash in the large grey or black trash bins with tops.
Please secure all trash cans tightly since raccoons are skilled at opening containers and making large messes. Thanks.

Permaculture Sunsport News

Medicinals: Anamu

Sunsport has many important and fascinating medicinal plants growing.

Anamu (Petiveria alliaceae) also known as Guinea Hen Weed or Garlic Weed, is a 4-foot-high, herbaceous perennial shrub, native to the Amazon rainforests and naturalized over the southern U.S., Central and South America, and the Caribbean. It is an attractive plant with alternate, leathery, dark green leaves and gently arching spikes of tiny white flowers that bloom in the winter. Its leaves, and especially its roots, emit a strong garlic odor when crushed and can be harvested year-round.

Anamu is used in medicines and magic rituals in the areas where it is grown. Indigenous peoples in Central and South America and urban herbalists use the leaves and roots as an anti-inflammatory and pain reducer, for coughs, colds, and flu, for digestive ailments, fever, cancer prevention, and diabetes treatment. Because of its strong odor, Anamu is also used as an insecticide and bat repellant.

This shrub is deep-rooted and easy to grow. It prefers moist, humid conditions and can grow in a variety of soil types and environments, including disturbed areas and coastal plains. It is hardy to USDA zone 9 to 11 but can be overwintered in colder regions and grown as a container plant.

Please make a small donation to help us continue to develop the Meditation and Permaculture Projects.

The Sunsport Permaculture Group has been very active. Recent projects have been enlarging the Community Garden and digging a swale to improve the water flow. The meetings have been well attended. Meetings are twice a month.

Check the website for exact day, at 7 pm in the restaurant.

Currently:
The Permaculture Sunsport group is meeting on the second and fourth Tuesdays at 7:00 PM in the dining room. Contact Geoffrey Farmer, [email protected], to receive notice of meetings and garden workdays.

Hey What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is a philosophy of design for creating a sustainable human culture. That is, it's a way of thinking about how we set up the support systems around us: shelter, food, water, energy, society and business. Well designed permaculture systems allow us to live as a beneficial part of the ecosystems around us.
