IMPORTANT:

As a reminder, rates for memberships and site and accommodations rentals will increase by 5% beginning January 1st, 2023. This is necessary since Sunsport has been hit hard by the inflation this year. There has been a dramatic increase in the cost of maintenance supplies, utilities, insurance, almost everything. Also, Florida law requires that all employees be paid at least $15 per hour by 2026. The Sunsport Board has decided to raise employee wages by $1 per hour each year until the $15 per hour is reached.
Sunsport's wonderful and capable staff certainly deserves the raises.

IMPORTANT TRASH POLICY CHANGE

The trash area in the northeast corner of Sunsport has been eliminated. Large trash items may now be placed only in the maintenance yard with the supervision of Team Leader Roger Byrd, preferably Monday through Friday.
The trailer holding recyclable scrap metal will be moved to the maintenance area. Plastic bags full of waste should be deposited in the dumpster in the recycling area, not in the maintenance area.
banner-recyclevert
Reminder:
Please use the appropriate containers for throwing out items. Place materials such as paper and cardboard in the yellow bins; cans, plastics except Styrofoam, juice boxes, and glass and plastic bottles in the blue bins. Place large items such as platforms and furniture near, but not in, the dumpster. Place only bagged garbage and small items in the dumpster. Never place plastic bags in the bins since they clog the recycling equipment. Thank you.

To help Sunsport and the environment, *please deposit aluminum cans in a special bin with a round hole in the top in the main recycling area.
  • The yellow containers are for paper and flattened cardboard
  • The blue containers are for aluminum cans*, glass, juice boxes, and plastics except styrofoam, bags, and utensils.
  • Deposit other trash in the large grey or black trash bins with tops.
Please secure all trash cans tightly since raccoons are skilled at opening containers and making large messes. Thanks.

IO Moth

You may wonder what the name Io means. In Greek mythology, Io was originally a beautiful young woman who had caught the eye of the god Zeus. Somewhere along the way she was transformed into a goddess and the name Io has been associated with beauty ever since. So Io Moths are the “beautiful moths”, and you only need to see one to believe it! You can find them living among the Oak trees at Sunsport.
Io Moths fly at night but spend the daylight hours resting on the leaf litter of the forest floor. Io Moths, as adults, do not feed.
IO-cat-IMG_4977
A person touching one of these Io caterpillars is “rewarded” with a painful sting, as well. The venom, the chemical nature of which is yet unstudied, causes a “painful nettling and itching reaction followed by the formation of a localized wheal (welt) and reddening of the skin around the wheal.” The reaction can last for six to eight hours.

A male Io Moth is a beautiful creature. Those large black spots on its hind wings resemble the eyes of an owl. The moth flashes its eyespots to startle a would-be predator.
Io Moths resting on the leaf litter
When an animal has evolved a resemblance to another organism or object, the biological term for this is “mimicry.” Io Moths have evolved two forms of mimicry: the eyespots on the opened hind wings, and the dead leaf coloration of the resting moth. But those are not all the protective adaptations this exceptional moth has developed. The Io Moth typically turns head down when it flashes its eyespots, making the image of an owl even more realistic.

Hey What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is a philosophy of design for creating a sustainable human culture. That is, it's a way of thinking about how we set up the support systems around us: shelter, food, water, energy, society and business. Well designed permaculture systems allow us to live as a beneficial part of the ecosystems around us.

Art & Naturism.......naturist spirited art

Picasso, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon

Cézanne's ghost, Matisse's Bonheur de Vivre, and Picasso's ego

One of the most important canvases of the twentieth century, Picasso’s great breakthrough painting Les Demoiselles d’Avignon was constructed in response to several significant sources.

Pablo Picasso, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, 1907
Pablo Picasso, Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, 1907

First amongst these was his confrontation with Cézanne’s great achievement at the posthumous retrospective mounted in Paris a year after the artist’s death in 1907.

Paul Cézanne, The Large Bathers, 1906
Paul Cézanne, The Large Bathers, 1906

The retrospective exhibition forced the young Picasso, Matisse, and many other artists to contend with the implications of Cézanne’s art. Matisse's Bonheur de Vivre of 1906 was one of the first of many attempts to do so, and the newly completed work was quickly purchased by Leo & Gertrude Stein and hung in their living room so that all of their circle of avant-garde writers and artists could see and praise it. And praise it they did. Here was the promise of Cézanne fulfilled—and one which incorporated lessons learned from Seurat and Van Gogh, no less! This was just too much for the young Spaniard.

Pablo becomes Picasso

By all accounts, Picasso’s intensely competitive nature literally forced him to out do his great rival. Les Demoiselles D’Avignon is the result of this effort. Let’s compare canvases. Matisse’s landscape is a broad open field with a deep recessionary vista. The figures are uncrowded. They describe flowing arabesques that in turn relate to the forms of nature that surround them. Here is languid sensuality set in the mythic past of Greece’s golden age.........
