Reminder:
Please use the appropriate containers for throwing out items. Place materials such as paper and cardboard in the yellow bins; cans, plastics except Styrofoam, juice boxes, and glass and plastic bottles in the blue bins. Place large items such as platforms and furniture near, but not in, the dumpster. Place only bagged garbage and small items in the dumpster. Never place plastic bags in the bins since they clog the recycling equipment.

To help Sunsport and the environment, *please deposit aluminum cans in a special bin with a round hole in the top in the main recycling area.
  • The yellow containers are for paper and flattened cardboard
  • The blue containers are for aluminum cans*, glass, juice boxes, and plastics except styrofoam, bags, and utensils.
  • Deposit other trash in the large grey or black trash bins with tops.
Please secure all trash cans tightly since raccoons are skilled at opening containers and making large messes. Thanks.

The Baobab Tree:

from Africa to Sunsport

IMG_2861
IMG_2855

Yes we have a Baobab Tree at Sunsport.

See if you can find it next time you are out wondering the trails.

The Baobab tree looks like it was planted upside down. This is most noticeable when the tree losses it leaves when our winters sometimes cause them to defoliate. Baobab trees have a thick exterior bark resembling elephant skin. The bark has a unique ability to grow back and not just leave a scar on the damaged area like other trees. Baobab trees also produce edible leaves and fruits. They are also considered to have many medicinal properties.
The Baobab tree is known as the tree of life and with good reason. These trees can live for thousands of years. The enormous trees have huge swollen trunks that can hold thousands of gallons of water. In Africa the trees are tapped and plugged. Need a drink, thirsty explorer? Well just open the tap and pour yourself a drink!
These trees have actually served as shelters for some native people of the African continent to live in. Would you believe me if I told you that in Kenya, they even have trees so huge they are actual pubs. Yes sir, you can go inside the living tree, have a seat and ask the bartender to pour you a beer.

Baobab trees can be found growing in Coral Gables, Fairchild Tropical Botanical Gardens and you can also find one at Yesteryear Village at the South Florida Fairgrounds in West Palm Beach. That Baobab Tree was donated by Bob Reagan from Palm Beach County in 1999. He was loosing his property to an eminent domain order to make way for everglades restoration. Rather than see the tree destroyed by flooding he reached out to the non profit at Yesteryear Village. The staffers succeeded in raising $20,000 to up root and replant the baobab. The tree was moved and planted on the village grounds in February 2000. Below is a picture of the tree as of Feb 4, 2019. We will bring you more information about the Baobab Trees of South Florida in future articles.

Hey What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is a philosophy of design for creating a sustainable human culture. That is, it's a way of thinking about how we set up the support systems around us: shelter, food, water, energy, society and business. Well designed permaculture systems allow us to live as a beneficial part of the ecosystems around us.

Art & Naturism.......naturist spirited art

The Nudes of Art Nouveau

Art Nouveau – the decorative, sensual, and uncompromising design style that flourished at the turn of the 20th century – was born at a time of rapid change.

art-nouveau-nude-watercolor-paintings-by-a-crommen-1918-set-of-2-2
by A. Crommen and dated 1918.

While new media such as film and photography provided alternative ways of viewing the world, the moral landscape of Europe and America was beginning to shift, and artists and designers used the erotic to push the boundaries of established convention. The risqué and often shockingly explicit content of many Art Nouveau works is one of the most striking and disturbing features of the style.

The turn of the 20th century, perhaps more than any other period in the history of art, was a time of sexual freedom and decadent extravagance. Art Nouveau reflected this fascination with sexual and erotic identity, particularly female sexuality, in a world beginning to experience the social, economic and cultural liberation of women. Women became the dominant theme of Art Nouveau and the erotic potential of the female body was fully exploited to express many different concerns.
