Sunsport Gardens is enjoying some of the best weather of the year with lots of sun and not too hot or cold weather.

    Community Happenings

People are playing daily petanque and increasingly popular pickle ball. There is also volleyball limited to fours due to the need for social distancing even outdoors. We have had some morning qigong and, of course, Saturday evening movie nights with popcorn where people take turns choosing the movie to be shown. Many of Sunsport's members have been vaccinated. Hopefully almost all will be vaccinated by the end of May allowing some relaxation of restrictions. We're looking forward to being able to exchange hugs with friends again.

    Reminder:

The Sunsport Maintenance Team spends many hours daily collecting trash and recycling. Please bag all trash, separate recycling items, and either notify maintenance if you are putting large items in front of your lot or put large items in front of, not in, the main dumpster. It would be most helpful if residents and guests would take all recyclable items and bagged trash to the main dumpster area.

To help Sunsport and the environment, *please deposit aluminum cans in a special bin with a round hole in the top in the main recycling area.
    • The yellow containers are for paper and flattened cardboard
    • The blue containers are for aluminum cans*, glass, juice boxes, and plastics except styrofoam, bags, and utensils.
    • Deposit other trash in the large grey or black trash bins with tops.
Please secure all trash cans tightly since raccoons are skilled at opening containers and making large messes. Thanks.

    Alligators

Sunsport often has alligators in its ponds. For safety reasons, the County attempts to relocate them to the Everglades. It is almost impossible to trap the alligators when people feed the fish and turtles.

The people food is not good for the fish and turtles; please refrain from the feeding particularly when alligators are around as in late March.

May is the month when lower summer rates for ground fees and site rentals start.

Site holders may choose between taking a significantly lower summer rate or opting for a year-round rate which is half way between the summer and winter rates.

Three new young families have moved into Sunsport. Come meet them and enjoy Sunsport's natural beauty.

The Sunsport Board has established a Nature Preserve

area including the walking and golf cart nature trails through the jungle, the labyrinth, the permaculture project, the lotus pond, and the meditation field overlooked by the new beautiful Buddha Head. The cart trail has been elevated to avoid flooding. There will be no camping in the area, just experiencing Sunsport's natural beauty. Thanks to John Dodge and the Planning and Land Stewardship Committee for developing the area. The Nature Preserve exemplifies the spirit of Sunsport.

    Permaculture Sunsport News

    Our Newest Addition :

    Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis)

You can eat breadfruit at any stage. When it's small and green, it tastes like an artichoke. When it's starchy and mature, it's the equivalent of a potato. When it's soft and ripe, it's dessert.
A traditional staple in Hawaii, breadfruit is sometimes called the tree potato, for its potato-like consistency when cooked. Except breadfruit has higher-quality protein and packs a healthy dose of vitamins and minerals.
Please make a small donation to help us continue to create.

    Hey What is Permaculture?

    Geoff Farmer:
Permaculture is a philosophy of design for creating a sustainable human culture. That is, it's a way of thinking about how we set up the support systems around us: shelter, food, water, energy, society and business. Well designed permaculture systems allow us to live as a beneficial part of the ecosystems around us.

    Art & Naturism.......naturist spirited art

    Imogen Cunningham (1883 – 1976)

One of the most prolific photographers in the history of the medium, Imogen Cunningham broke barriers for women in photography and was an important figure in the movement fine art photography in the early to mid-1900s.

    Self Portrait, 1906
Born in Portland, Oregon in 1883, Cunningham began her photographic pursuits with glass plate, a large format camera, and often using herself as a model, as seen in one of her fist images, Self-Portrait, 1906, thought to be the first nude female self-portrait in photographic history.
Screen Shot 2021-04-01 at 10.56.23 PM
She also pushed the medium’s boundaries in her Mount Rainier images in which she was one of the first to place a nude male subject (her husband, Roi Partridge) in front of her lens. Her experimental camera and darkroom work, detailed plant studies, and gripping portraits of fellow artists and dancers are also among the most praised images of the time.

“One must be able to gain an understanding at short notice and close range of the beauties of character, intellect, and spirit so as to be able to draw out the best qualities and make them show in the outer aspect of the sitter. To do this one must not have a too pronounced notion of what constitutes beauty in the external and, above all, must not worship it. To worship beauty for its own sake is narrow, and one surely cannot derive from it that esthetic pleasure which comes from finding beauty in the commonest things.” – Imogen Cunningham
