Extension cords are used by most people at Sunsport. However, the size of cord people use can make a big difference in power use and can be a dangerous hazard. You are advised to use 10 or 12 gauge extension cords on all your large and small appliances. Smaller cords can get hot and become a fire hazard. When not in use, please unplug all extension cords to save power. Yes, people pay a higher electric bill by leaving them plugged in.

Please no longer place items in recycling bins at the end of driveways.
Place large items in the dumpster in the recycling area. Place all other items in the trash collection stations or the recycling area.
Remember, the large blue containers are for metal, glass, juice boxes, and plastic, but not styrofoam, plastic bags, straws, or plastic utensils. The yellow containers are for clean paper and cardboard. Aluminum soda, seltzer, and beer cans may also be placed in the specially marked containers. All other items should be bagged and placed in the large grey containers or in the dumpster.

To help Sunsport and the environment, *please deposit aluminum cans in a special bin with a round hole in the top in the main recycling area.
  • The yellow containers are for paper and flattened cardboard
  • The blue containers are for aluminum cans*, glass, juice boxes, and plastics except styrofoam, bags, and utensils.
  • Deposit other trash in the large grey or black trash bins with tops.
Please secure all trash cans tightly since raccoons are skilled at opening containers and making large messes. Thanks.

Inga - Ice Cream Bean Tree

One of our next projects for next year will be the planting of an Inga Forest back in the triangle behind the Community Garden.

What is Inga - Ice Cream Bean?

Inga edulis or commonly known as Ice Cream Bean is a fast-growing fruit tree native to South America. It grows up to 30 m tall and 60 cm in trunk diameter. It is an evergreen and forms a broad, spreading canopy. The leaves are compound with 4-6 pairs of leaflets. The flowers re near the ends of branches.

A member of the Legume family (Fabaceae), known for its nitrogen-fixing roots, the Inga genus is a group of 381 tropical shrubs and trees. Several species have edible, tasty seedpod filling and are known as Ice Cream Bean. Of these, Inga feuilleei, Pacay, is the most cold hardy, heat tolerant, and most widely cultivated. Inga edulis, often cited as the best tasting, has a restricted cultivation range. Inga feuilleei is considered nearly as flavorful.
It is popular in South America for its edible fruits. The long pod fruits have sweet flavor, white, translucent, jelly-like pulp. Leaf decoctions are used against cough and lip sores. The plant is also planted as shade tree in coffee and cacao plantations. The wood is moderately hard, not very heavy, very durable, and used for making packing cases and piles, and for fuel.

The species we will be growing are:

Inga edulis

Inga insignis

Inga vulpina

Inga feuillei

Inga spectabilis

Inga genus plants are distantly related to other Legume family members with edible bean pods or filling, such as Carob, Guamuchil, and Tamarind.

Hey What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is a philosophy of design for creating a sustainable human culture. That is, it's a way of thinking about how we set up the support systems around us: shelter, food, water, energy, society and business. Well designed permaculture systems allow us to live as a beneficial part of the ecosystems around us.
