Sunsport Gardens Notes

We now have beautiful fountains in both ponds. The fountains plus the efforts of the permaculture group are keeping the invasive salvinia at bay. The salvinia removed is being used for natural garden fertilizer. Particular thanks to Casper Chestnut and John Dodge for making it happen. This project is in line with Sunsport's policy of not using herbicides or pesticides on the grounds.

Much work has been done on the golf cart and walking nature trails. They are fantastic. People are now walking and take daily golf cart rides past the lotus pond, Buddha head, banana circles, ponds, and native trees. Special thanks to John Dodge and Geoff Farmer who have spent many volunteer hours on this amazing transformation.
The community garden is now full of produce. The members tending it can be very proud.

Sunsport's 14th Annual Naturist Family Youth Gathering will be July 8-16

Spaces for campers are still available. Children aged 5-17 and their families will experience a fun week of growth and community emphasizing interpersonal relations skills and creativity in a natural environment. As usual we will have a fun-filled day playing in the sand and surf at a clothing-optional ocean beach, a camp variety show, crafts, nature exploration, canuding and kayaking, non-competitive sports, producing a claymation video, campfires, and lots of pool time, with individual attention for each camper. There will be special activities best done clothesfree such as a slip-n-slide with paint, tie dye, water balloon throwing, gooey games, and a 10 foot ice cream sundae with as much landing on bodies as in mouths. Workshops on being proud of who we are, body acceptance, communication skills, and conflict resolution will help establish an atmosphere of caring about each other's feelings and positive relationships.
Parents are encouraged to attend the gathering participating as much or as little as they like. Most of the favorite counselors will be returning. A gallery of camp photos, articles, and claymation videos from past years are on Sunsport's website. Enrollment forms are also on Sunsport's website. If your child is attending, please email Morley at [email protected]."

Relax and have fun. Don't forget to explore the trails.

Nitrogen Fixing Runners in Meditation Field

Meditation Field is home to many nitrogen fixing plants. 3 of the more prominent ones are runners, 2 live on land and one on top of the water.

Pictured above are the 3 running legumes.
The pink powderpuff one is the native Sunshine mimosa (Mimosa strigillosa).
The other two sport yellow flowers.
Perennial Peanut (Arachis glabrata).
And the water loving Botswana Wonder (Aeschynomene Fluitans).
It's crucial to understand what nitrogen fixation is. Simply put, it's the process where nitrogen in the atmosphere is converted into a form that plants and other organisms can use. Nitrogen is an essential component for the growth and survival of plants.
These plants, part of the legume family, are particularly good at this, thanks to their symbiotic relationship with a type of bacteria known as Rhizobia. These microscopic organisms colonize the roots of the Mimosa, forming nodules that become hotspots for nitrogen fixation.
legumes plants contribute significantly to soil health by introducing usable nitrogen, thereby nurturing both macro and microscopic life forms. Here's how they do this:
  • Nitrogen Enrichment: legumes plants are skilled in creating usable nitrogen, an essential nutrient for all plants, benefiting not just themselves but also the wider soil ecosystem.
  • Nourishing Microorganisms: The nitrogen produced by legumes nurtures the soil's microscopic life, including bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms, all of which play a critical role in maintaining soil health.
  • Decomposition: These microorganisms are responsible for decomposing organic matter, transforming dead plant material and other organic waste into nutrient-rich substances absorbable by plants.
  • Soil Ecosystems: The nitrogen provided by legumes sets off a beneficial nutrient cycle, leading to healthier, more productive soil ecosystems.
  • Biodiversity: Through this process, legumes support the growth and development of a multitude of plants and contribute to the overall health of the ecosystem.
In essence, by enriching the soil with nitrogen, these plants contribute to a natural, beneficial nutrient cycle, bolstering biodiversity and fostering a healthy environment.

Hey What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is a philosophy of design for creating a sustainable human culture. That is, it's a way of thinking about how we set up the support systems around us: shelter, food, water, energy, society and business. Well designed permaculture systems allow us to live as a beneficial part of the ecosystems around us.

Art & Naturism.......naturist spirited art

How the Church Tolerated Nudity in Renaissance Art

by Mason West

Through the dark ages the Church preserved the art, books, and ideas of the ancients as the essence of Western civilization. As the Renaissance brought these materials to light for the first time in centuries, the ancient gods and myths weren’t viewed as divinities and scripture, which would have been a heresy in strangely monotheistic, triune Christianity, but as allegories imbued with the wisdom of the ancients.

Ulysses and Penelope, c. 1545. Francesco Primaticcio (1505–1570)
Another element of the Classics, especially the Greeks, was their comfort with nudity. In Greek athletics the physically perfect human bodies were considered evidence of the transcendence of humans toward divinity. So, for example, a Roman bust of Julius Caesar places Caesar’s head atop a torso with six-pack abs: the idea isn’t so much that Caesar had a great body but that he was a demigod.
The Birth of Venus, c. 1480. Sandro Botticelli (1445–1510).
When the Renaissance happened, the Church scriptoria’s vast collections of texts and art, nipples and all, paved the bridge to the ancients. The idea was to pick up civilization where the Classical civilizations had left off.

Consequently, a Church and society that were patriarchal, authoritarian, and prone to aversion to nudity tolerated it, beginning with Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus (1486). Shortly thereafter, in 1510, Giorgione painted a sleeping Venus, an allusion to the myth of Cupid, Psyche, and Venus. Giorgione died before he finished his painting, so his student, Titian, finished it. Thus began a long history of reclining or sleeping Venus images that culminated with Manet’s Olympia (1863).
Sleeping Venus (1508). Giorgione (Giorgio Barbarelli da Castelfranco).
Everything about Olympia, beginning with her name, mocks the Neoplatonic tradition from which artists had derived their license to paint the world’s beauty. The picture openly defied the respect to Classical arts that had provided a rationale for nudity in art. For most artists, the Neoplatonic movement with its allegories and adoration of ideas and ideals, had been a kind of hypocrisy, a false conversion, or a marriage of convenience all along. Olympia’s physical build looks normal to us now, but in the mid-nineteenth century she looked shockingly anorexic though perhaps typical of women in the Red Light district. She looks out of the canvas directly and shamelessly at the viewer as if to say, “Yes, I, Olympia, am not a goddess but a whore!” Indeed, her maidservant is handing her a bouquet of flowers from a newly arrived gentleman caller.
Olympia, 1863. Édouard Manet (1832–1883).
Francesco Primaticcio’s painting of a nude man and woman in bed together, under the guise of Ulysses and Penelope (c. 1563), is no exception to that history. And that history depicts a long conflict between an authoritarian patriarchal ruling class, which equates the feminine with shame, and a matriarchal, life-giving force, which equates femininity with beauty.
