The Midwinter Naturist Festival was a great success

Attendance was a little down due to the pandemic but was greater than expected. There were over 200 activities. All 6 days had beautiful warm weather. People respected the safety of the community with masks and social distancing. At the Closing Friendship Circle, people said they were particularly impressed with the beautiful grounds and the food in the restaurant.

Many thanks to the workshop leaders, the Sunsport volunteers, and the Sunsport staff who worked long hours to produce a smooth running and stimulating Festival.

Contributions from the Festival registration fee will go to the Naturist Society Foundation, South Florida Free Beaches (Haulover Beach), and Treasure Coast Naturists (Blind Creek Beach).

As always, the Festival was six days of fun, growth, and community.

    Community Happenings

The Eighth Annual Coed Volleyball Tournament near the end of February was lots of fun. It is unique in that players are a member of a different team for each game. Suzann Mann and Darrell Steen were crowned queen and king for totaling the most points in the games in which they played.

    Monthly Drum Circle

The March 5th First Friday Community Drum Circle is ON!
The drumming leaders will remind people to wear masks and social distance 6 feet apart. We are reinstituting the Drum Circles due to confidence that drummers and dancers will respect their own safety and the safety of others.

Some invasive domesticated ducks have flown into Sunsport's ponds. They breed quickly, multiplying the ducks on the grounds. They leave droppings all over on roadways and people's decks. Please do not feed them; feeding them encourages their stay.

    IMPORTANT ELECTION NEWS!

    Lox-Seat-1

An election for two seats on the Loxahatchee Groves Town Council will take place on March 9th.

It is very important for all Loxahatchee Grove voters to participate since the results will have a great impact on nature of the Town and Sunsport's surroundings.
Two candidates, Dave DeMarois and Marianne Miles, favor paving the roads and commercial development on Okeechobee Boulevard.
The two incumbents, Phillis Maniglia and Lisa El-Ramey, want to maintain the rural character of the Town including narrow roads, limited commercial traffic, and large tracts of land. To prevent widening Okeechobee Boulevard and to enhance the Town's ambiance, they favor creating an equestrian, bicycle, and foot path on the south side of Okeechobee and roundabouts to keep traffic moving slowly.
All candidates want to improve the quality of the roads, but have different visions of the town's future. Since there are usually fewer than 500 voters in town, each vote has more impact than in elections with many voters. A recent election was won by only four votes.
In case you have not already mailed an absentee ballot, voting takes place at the Presbyterian Church on Okeechobee March 9th.

Please help recycle. Place clean paper and cardboard in the yellow bins and cans, plastics (except bags, styrofoam, and utensils), and bottles in the blue bins. Leave word in the office if you need yellow and blue totes or small bins which can be placed roadside near your site for pick-up. Most important, place large items such as platforms and furniture near, but not in, the dumpster. Place only bagged garbage in the dumpster.

To help Sunsport and the environment, *please deposit aluminum cans in a special bin with a round hole in the top in the main recycling area.
    • The yellow containers are for paper and flattened cardboard
    • The blue containers are for aluminum cans*, glass, juice boxes, and plastics except styrofoam, bags, and utensils.
    • Deposit other trash in the large grey or black trash bins with tops.
Please secure all trash cans tightly since raccoons are skilled at opening containers and making large messes. Thanks.

    IMG_0649

The next weekend for young adults will be the Full Bloom Music Medley April 9-11. Save the dates. Coordinator Karl Harris promises another great event.

At the end of January, Sunsport had 299 annual full time members. That is a record number. Word about wonderful Sunsport Gardens is spreading. People visit and don't want to leave.

This March, all sites at Sunsport are full; interesting activities are scheduled daily or people can relax by the pool or explore the nature trail. I am looking forward to a month with much fun in a great community.

    Hey What is Permaculture?

    Geoff Farmer:
Permaculture is a philosophy of design for creating a sustainable human culture. That is, it's a way of thinking about how we set up the support systems around us: shelter, food, water, energy, society and business. Well designed permaculture systems allow us to live as a beneficial part of the ecosystems around us.

    Art & Naturism.......naturist spirited art

The feminist history of women artists taking nudes in nature

From Francesca Woodman, to Carolee Schneemann and Judy Chicago, Mother Nature was a powerful force for liberation

Sandro Botticelli, Pablo Picasso, and Lucien Freud have two things in common: they hold some of the world best recognised female nudes, yet they are all men. Existing across time and space, the way their nudes, like Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” (1464), have been famed in art history shows how women were stripped of their own natural state so men could excel in the art world.
    1250003
“Untitled: Silueta Series, Mexico, From Works in Mexico”, 1973-1977Photography Ana Mendieta
Constantly at battle with a society who would rather objectify the female nude than let women dictate their own representation, women began to resist artistically in many ways. Take the activist-artist group, Guerrilla Girls, for example, who launched a poster campaign in 1984 aimed at New York’s Metropolitan Museum. “Do women have to be naked to get into the Met. Museum?”, reads one of its most well-known posters, which targets the amount of male-produced female nudes that were in the space, as well as the museum’s role in propelling art’s gender disparity. Outside of poster art, many female artists took to staged protests and performance art within global cities to reclaim the female nude.
