Brazilian Spinach growing in the Community/Market Garden.
You can also see it in the Garden Tower

Description: Brazilian spinach is a hardy, low-growing, perennial, leaf vegetable. This is an extremely resilient plant that thrives through the heat of summer, during weeks without rain, and in cold, frosty winters.

Culinary Uses: The leaves and young stems are edible and are eaten raw or cooked. In its native Brazil, the leaves are commonly eaten raw in salads with oil, vinegar, tomato and onion. Fresh Brazilian spinach has a firm, crunchy texture, and is not slimy like some other perennial spinaches. It’s a very tasty substitute for spinach, and can be added to stir-fries and baked dishes such as quiche, lasagne and pies. One simple use is to chop leaves into scrambled eggs or an omelette.
Nutrition: The nutritional content of Brazilian spinach is similar to other leafy greens. It contains manganese, folate, magnesium, iron, copper, vitamins B2, B6, C and E, calcium, and potassium, and is very low in calories and fats.

    Reminder:

Please use the appropriate containers for throwing out items. Place materials such as paper and cardboard in the yellow bins; cans, plastics except Styrofoam, juice boxes, and glass and plastic bottles in the blue bins.

Place large items such as platforms and furniture near, but not in, the dumpster. Place only bagged garbage and small items in the dumpster. Never place plastic bags in the bins since they clog the recycling equipment.

To help Sunsport and the environment, please deposit aluminum cans in a special bin with a round hole in the top in the main recycling area.
    • The yellow containers are for paper and flattened cardboard
    • The blue containers are for aluminum cans, glass, juice boxes, and plastics except styrofoam, bags, and utensils.
    • Deposit other trash in trash cans.
Please secure all trash cans tightly since raccoons are skilled at opening containers and making large messes. Thanks.

    Permaculture Sunsport News

"When we try to pick out anything by itself we find that it is bound fast by a thousand invisible cords that cannot be broken, to everything in the universe. "

    - John Muir

    1902_John_Muir_LOC
    Remembering John Muir
who innately felt the core principle of Permaculture - that Nature is interconnected and by studying the patterns those connections make we can create and live in an efficient system that nurtures Nature instead of exploiting it.
John Muir was an influential Scottish-American naturalist, inventor, explorer, writer, and an advocate for the preservation of wilderness in the United States.

Through his writings, he has inspired millions of readers, including presidents and congressmen, to take action to help preserve and restore the natural environment.
Born on April 21, 1838, in Dunbar, Scotland, Muir had a strict religious upbringing and began his “love affair” with nature while still young. His family immigrated to the United States in 1849 and started a farm near Portage, Wisconsin, which has since been designated a National Historic Landmark.
In 1876, through articles published in popular periodicals, Muir encouraged the federal government to adopt a forest conservation. He is also remembered for his role in the establishment of Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks, founding the Sierra Club, and many other achievements.
More than a century since his passing, Muir still continues to inspire people to explore and conserve the outdoors. Below are some great John Muir quotes that will make you appreciate the beauty of nature and the importance of protecting it.

“When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.”

“In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.”

“None of Nature’s landscapes are ugly so long as they are wild.”

“Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul.”

“There is a love of wild Nature in everybody, an ancient mother-love ever showing itself whether recognized or no, and however covered by cares and duties.”

“Nature is ever at work building and pulling down, creating and destroying, keeping everything whirling and flowing, allowing no rest but in rhythmical motion, chasing everything in endless song out of one beautiful form into another.”

“The clearest way into the universe is through a forest wilderness.”

    Hey What is Permaculture?

    Geoff Farmer:
Permaculture is a philosophy of design for creating a sustainable human culture. That is, it's a way of thinking about how we set up the support systems around us: shelter, food, water, energy, society and business. Well designed permaculture systems allow us to live as a beneficial part of the ecosystems around us.

Botero’s Nude Paintings are Becoming Icons of Body Positivity

Colombian artist Fernando Boteros subjects are big—many would call them
    fat.

Screen Shot 2020-10-31 at 6.10.16 PM
    Nudist Family, 2009
Across his canvases, figures gaze fondly at their bodies in the mirror, are swathed in bullfighting garb or floral dresses that hug their curves, or lie naked on the beach or in bed eating fruit. In all of these scenarios, they stand, lounge, and gaze at the viewer with pride.
In interviews about his work, Botero has maintained that he doesn’t consider his figures to be fat.

“Nobody believes me but it is true,”

he explained in a 2014 interview with Spanish newspaper El Mundo.

“What I paint are volumes.…I am interested in volume, the sensuality of form.”

Despite the artist’s motives, however, proponents of the body positive and fat acceptance movements (who are active on social media with hashtags like #bodypositive and #selflove) have adopted Botero’s paintings as emblems for their cause: to celebrate bodies of all sizes.
