Disrobed dissenters form 2nd peace sign as state fights ruling

NORTH PALM BEACH — Iraq war protesters braved the cold weather Friday to demonstrate in the buff.

Although about 20 folks gathered at John D. MacArthur Beach State Park for the morning event, only about seven stripped to form a human peace sign in the sand, said T.A. Wyner, who helped organize the protest.

It was the second time in four years the "living nude peace sign" made its display there.

In 2003, a federal judge ruled the protest was legal after the law enforcement arm of the Florida Department of Environmental Regulation said it would arrest anyone who took off clothes.

The judge also ordered the state to pay the protesters' legal fees.

Organizers decided to make another sign this year in part because they recently learned that the state's appeal on the legal fees has been approved to make it to the U.S. Supreme Court, Wyner said.

The beach was practically empty when the protesters showed up in the morning - except for a family with young kids.

Luckily they were from Berkeley, Calif., Wyner said, "and they were happy to see an antiwar event."

The display was brief, and a theater performance followed, Wyner said.

Both events kicked off the annual Mid-Winter Naturist Festival at Sunsport Gardens in Loxahatchee.
