Sunsport Gardens Family Naturist Resort

The Sunsport Report

February, 2010 Volume 2, Issue 1

From The President's Deck

The Naturist Society has informed us that for the second year in a row Sunsport has more Naturist Society members than any other club, of any size. I am proud that our members support this organization that shares our values and does so much to protect and expand sites available for clothes free recreation. Sunsport Gardens hosts the Naturist Society’s Midwinter Naturist Festival and its Youth Camp each year.

It is a pleasure to welcome Sunsport's many seasonal guests who add much energy and fun to Sunsport.  We now have daily morning tennis and afternoon volleyball. The petanque courts are full.  The dances are well attended.  We even have a popular French/English language class.

Restaurant manager and executive chef Lou Behr now offers a full menu of delicious meals.  If you haven't tried Le Behr Cafe, I recommend that you check it out soon.

The new, beautiful hot tub spa is now open.  It is much larger than the old spa with stronger jets and a light.

It's time for the Midwinter Naturist Festival, Thursday, February 11, through Tuesday, February 16.  Six days of fun, growth and community with over 330 activities including the return of Armand and Angelina, Faerie Elaine Silver and Robin Renee.  There will be a meeting on Friday, February 5, at 7:30 pm in the Pavilion for members who wish to volunteer to help.  Anyone volunteering for at least 5 hours will have their Festival registration fee waived.  Volunteers are needed to help with housekeeping (rest rooms and showers), the Hospitality Tent, restaurant buffet service, parking cars, moving chairs and registration.  I anticipate that the Festival will be the best ever.  You can find the latest information on the Festival program including descriptions of all workshops at www.sunsportgardens.com.

2009 was a wonderful, joyful, peaceful year in our caring community and resort.  The grounds were maintained beautifully with significant upgrades.  Sunsport is financially stable; we are building a cushion for emergencies.  I thank our dedicated staff and volunteers for making Sunsport such a special place for all of us.

By Kathy Voron

Since this is our first edition of the new year, we all wish you a happy, healthy, nude year.

Sunsport is packed. The dances spill out onto the pool deck, people wait for tables in the restaurant, the laundry board is filled in and the new hot tub is packed. Ah, yes, the new hot tub.

Stronger jets, deeper and larger. Things can’t get much better.

The census is coming. Our constitution mandates a head count every 10 years since 1790. This helps determine the amount of federal funding each state gets. It helps with Head Start programs, WIC, road rehab, emergency shelters and education. It is completely confidential.

Forms will be mailed out on March 1st and I will assist you , here at Sunsport in filling in the 8 questions.

Our annual chili cook off , just prior to the Super Bowl, looks like it will be the largest and best tasting ever. Come on out and eat chili and watch the game on a giant screen TV.

You will see the cold weather damage to many plants as you roam our grounds. We also lost a lot of fish and iguanas. Brigitte and crew have been doing a great job of trimming and clearing away the old vegetation and planting new greenery.

BIGGEST PETANQUE TOURNAMENT EVER

Our two day event was rained out on Saturday so we did Sunday and Monday. Joan Herrin was our event organizer and a second tournament is planned for later in February.

We had 33 players, 11 teams and the games lasted ½ hour apiece.

On Monday the temp was in the mid 50s and only one team played in the nude. They thought that it would give them luck. It didn’t, they only got goose bumps.

Christiana Gaudet at her laptopNew Year's Eve At Haulover Beach

By Christiana Gaudet

Here in the Palm Beaches there were many options for a special New Year's Eve celebration. There was live music here at Sunsport Gardens, fireworks on Clematis Street, and a canoe outing at Grassy Waters Nature Preserve.

For us, there was only one way to ring in 2010; Nude Year's Eve at Haulover Beach. This was to be three days of revelry on the beach, and one glorious night where we were allowed to sleep on the beach.

The rare December 31st blue moon, and the start of the new decade, filled NYE 2010 with excitement even beyond the usual annual festivities. Being able to celebrate it in the nude and on the beach was like a dream come true for my Connecticut self.

A dream that looked in a lot of ways like an old Elvis movie, except nude. Or maybe a beach movie ten years newer than that, with love beads and incense. In those movies we never see the grittiness of the sand, or the dampness of the early morning.

Fact is, camping on the beach is a lot harder than it looks. But the opportunity to see the full moon rising over the water, and then, the next morning, the sun following its path, was worth every grain of sand in unmentionable places.

The entire event was produced by BEACHES Foundation and South Florida Free Beaches. The Beach Ambassadors did an amazing job organizing, answering questions, and making all five hundred of us comfortable. Shirley Mason, the "Mother of Haulover Beach," did an outstanding job presiding over every aspect of planning and running this major event, and being a gracious hostess at the New Year's Eve party.

The party itself was really terrific. A fully catered seafood dinner was followed by a drum circle and DJ dancing until the wee hours. I was so proud of Sunsport when, right after the midnight countdown, we four Sunsport residents were the only people to run into the surf for a midnight moonlight swim. Well, swim may be overstating it a bit. But we did surrender ourselves to the power of the ocean at night, and it was beautiful. Again, something of the movies that doesn't usually happen in a world where beaches close at sunset.

The next morning we took a swim at dawn and enjoyed a catered breakfast. By noon, the record-cold temperatures were descending on Florida. Though the party was to continue on the beach for two more days, we took our memories of a fabulous New Year's Eve and opted to finish our celebration back at Sunsport, in our cozy heated trailer.

The online travel website Tripadvisor.com listed Nude Year's Eve at Haulover Beach as the Most Extreme New Year's Eve Party in all of the United States and Europe. More extreme than skydiving at midnight in Zephyrhills, or wearing orange hats at the Hague.

My first reaction when I read the Tripadvisor list was to feel, for once in my life, like part of the elite ubercool. Woo-hoo, I am extreme! Not bad for forty-seven years old.

Next, it occurred to me that, since a bunch of middle aged folks camping on the beach isn't extreme at all, it must be the nudity that earned us that grand title. So clearly Tripadvisor had no idea that 2010 was being celebrated in the buff at literally hundreds, maybe thousands, of nudist parks and resorts throughout the world.

In the end, my final reaction to the Tripadvisor list was sadness. I was sad that social nudity, in 2010, is still considered "extreme." Events like Nude Year's Eve, the Sunsport Gardens Drum Circle, The Midwinter Naturist Festival and others that draw positive public attention to nudist culture may eventually help take our society's perception of social nudism from "extreme" to "normal."

For now, Nude Year's Eve at Haulover Beach was an EXTREMEly good time, and a great start to a new nude year.
